Beyond The Rocks A Love Story Elinor Glyn Books

I read this novel after viewing the 1922 silent movie version (starring Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino), which was recently rediscovered and made available on DVD. It's quite interesting to compare the events in the novel with the film. I'm not sure I would have thought this was a very complex or subtle book, but compared to the movie--which is enjoyable for its star power and production design, but is pretty simplistic in plot--it has a lot more sophistication. The book explores the characters' inner feelings in a much more complicated way, and doesn't include the constant venue changes and rather implausible action-rescue moments of the film. It also deals more frankly--although never in explicit detail--with the question of sex in a loveless marriage. The heroine's father and older woman friend are both more flawed and more appealing than they are in the film, and there are a few nice character touches, such as a man who, while nearly overcome with illness, manages to get to a copy of Burke's "Peerage," in order to make sure the tragic letter he's writing is addressed correctly.

Of the Glyn novels I've read, I prefer the funny ones, such as "Red Hair" (aka "The Vicissitudes of Evangeline"), over more serious stories such as this. However, I did appreciate the attempts made in this work to delve deeply into personal points of view, and I did prefer it to "Three Weeks," as the characters were, in my opinion, more believable. But I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a pronounced sentimental side.

Beyond The Rocks A Love Story Elinor Glyn Books Reviews

Elinor Glyn got a bad rep posthumously as a writer of sentimental romances without much merit. Evelyn Waugh's famous ditty about her (google for it) is perhaps more remembered than her stories. Yes, and also the facts that she built the careers of Rudolf Valentino ("Come with me to the Casbah!") and Teda Bara (the "It" girl).
But this story is really one of her best, imo. The main two characters, Lord Bracondale and Theodora, escape being cliches by the skin of the writer's eyeteeth-- or perhaps through her writing ability, which includes an occasional Fielding-esque address to the reader, and evocation of Fate. Lord Bracondale has shades of Mitford's Charles-Edourad de Valhubert, and Theodora has shades of his English-rose wife. But they do come up alive, and the story grabs and plucks at the tenderest heart-strings, and makes you wish you could warn the character against-- what? It's hardly clear what they could do differently, so skillful does the author lay her sly traps into which they can fall, bleeding delicately, pierced by cupid's arrows.
As a side note Every seemingly frivolous author of that age had a book in which he/she managed to get deeper than his/her usual. Waugh's (imo) was A Handful of Dust, and Glyn's was this one. Read it, and shed a delicious tear or two, and raise a cup of champers for Ms. Glyn, who's probably lolling high above with Mr. Waugh on (yes) a tiger skin. (Do google the ditty he wrote about her. You won't regret it. It survived more successfully than her books, alas.) Five stars, easily.
Story started out a little slow but became interesting as more characters were added. I enjoyed it very very much.
Worth reading because of historical fun in reading rOmdnce novel if another era that is well done. Oddly moving.
Have not read yet.
Well written novel about love and all aspects of it. although written about hundred years ago it is very modern. if you read only one book by Elinor Glyn read this one. Elinor Glyn writing ability is best shown in this work than in others.
Really a love/hate drama. I guess you can rationalize and excuse any behavior if you try hard enough. Sad that the only really honest character in the book is the one who dies. I guess it would give good pointers on how to excuse your worst actions or desires.
This book goes on and on about this love between a worldly man and a naïve, beautiful young married woman. Did I mention her father wanted her to marry a rich old man(money)? And she thinks her handsome father is wonderful. All ends well for the beautiful people. Isn't that the way always?
The end.
