Recommended for children ages 7 to 9.

Franny Randy and the OvertheEdge Cat Person Uli Knoepflmacher 9780982571507 Books

Uli Knoepflmacher is a brilliant literary scholar and a leading proponent for the serious study of children's literature. But excellence as a critic is no guarantee that one will also write excellent literature.

Fortunately for us, Uli Knoepflmacher has done just that. This book's charming narrator, while indebted to the Kipling of Just-So Stories, is a gentle and humorously avuncular storyteller. The story itself is equally charming. There are lots of of in-jokes for fans of the golden age children's literature Knoepflmacher has discussed so eloquently in Ventures into Childland: Victorians, Fairy Tales, and Femininity, such as a pair of excitable puppaloosas named Juliana and Horatio. The twins, Randy and Franny, are adventurous and intellectual in a world that devalues adventure and intellect. And the "Over-the-Edge Cat Person" is, well, magical.

Finally, Knoepflmacher's illustrations are as quirky and cleverly allusive as his storytelling

Highly Recommended!

Franny Randy and the OvertheEdge Cat Person Uli Knoepflmacher 9780982571507 Books Reviews

This charming story is punctuated by lovely line drawings from the hand of the author himself. Both children and adults with be entertained by the amusing story of Franny and Randy.
From a professor of fairy tales, what a brilliant treat.
My eight year old gave it an "A", and I enjoyed it as well.
Would also be a good book for those children who are inching beyond the picture book age and yet not quite at chapter books.
Superb.
Can someone knowledgeable about children's literature down the ages really write a book that will appeal to children now? And is this a book good for reading TO children AND for them to read by themselves? Here it is clearly "Yes!" The language sounds true and paints clear pictures of real persons and some of their funny ways. From long experience of studying young children and working with teachers I can see that "Franny, Randy, and the Over-the-Edge Cat Person" would be great to read aloud to children; their interest would be quickly grabbed and the excitement mounts with each chapter. We can see the important elements of suspense, mystery and anticipation and some of children's frequent fears being delicately handled. The main characters are true to lifeI would love to get to know Franny and Randy better and hear more of their life and adventures! The mysterious old man in the story is a good example of things not always being what they seem and there is a subtle message about the dangers of prejudice and stereotyping. After the moving and delicate way we learn how these children miss their absent parents and handle these feelings, the resolution of the mystery leaves us happy and satisfied but wanting to hear more! I loved the illustrations too; a privileged older child might even be allowed to colour them - as a very special treat.
Leaving the mummified prose of academia behind, but with abundant nods to the classic children's stories that have been his bailiwick and, I suspect, his love for many a year, Uli Knoepflmacher has written a gentle, whimsical tale of kindness and compassion. Twins Franny and Randy are perhaps just a bit more tolerant and imaginative than the other children and adults in their town, characteristics that lead them to befriend the curious, mysterious Over-the-Edge Cat Person. With wry humor and ample word play on almost every page (Uli reminds us, for example, that "senile" and "senator" come from the same Latin root), adults as well as children will find much that is engaging in this little treasure. Many in our culture might also benefit from the book's message that kindness, wherever we may direct it, towards those who depend upon us, such as animals, or towards those who walk along the margins of society, such as over-the-edge cat persons, inevitably finds its way back to us. In this regard Uli most assuredly carries on the work of his hero, E. B. White, who also reminded us, through a runt pig and an articulate spider, that decency and goodness and friendship lift up us all. Magical! Magnanimous! Magnificent! (Sure to be a hit with both children and cats!)
